I went back to Thailand in 2001which was the first time I had gone back to my mother land since I was 10 years old. I met up with one of my cousins and we went out for dinner. She did all the ordering. When this fruit sum tum arrived I was puzzled as sum tum to me was always made with green papaya. She told me that this was the ‘in thing’ in Thailand at the moment. Reluctantly I tried it. It was lovely! Fresh fruit in a spicy, sweet and sour dressing was wonderful. It sounds so wrong but it really does work.
